Abd
Al-Nasser resign
General
Mohamed Abd Al-Ghany Al-Gamasy said in his memoirs (
During these
incidents, president Abd Al-Nasser, announced his resignation assigning
his responsibilities to Zakaria Mohi Al-Deen. Abd
Al-Nasser believed that he was historically
responsible of that defeat.
On 9th and 10th of June
demonstrations moved around streets of Cairo refusing the resignation
decision. The Nation Council and Cabinet refused the same decision. On 10th, president Abd Al-Nasser
addressed the nation saying, "I'll be in my place just to remove the remains of
the defeat. Then, we have to make a public referendum; because I’m convinced
by my decision, and the opinion of our people is considered an order to
me that must be done."
While we were listening to
the news in Ismailia from Cairo Broadcasting. Our forces were not
constant and unable to defend the Canal area. Our only concern was to
collect our forces again and calculating the size of loss to take
necessary situations in the western bank and providing them weapons whatever they
were few.
The Israeli forces were
dominating the eastern bank of the Suez Canal, while tears in our eyes and bitter
fill our hearts, our armed forces were a victim and we politically and
military had been defeated. It was a hard time and beyond description, no one
could feel it except those who underwent these events in Sinai and
the Canal area.)
